Built in 1952, the Van Buren Housing Authority was the first Housing Authority established in Maine. Its purpose is to provide safe, decent, and affordable housing for the residents of Van Buren, Cyr Plantation, Hamlin and the surrounding areas. The Housing Authority has 7 full-time staff members and 2 partime workers. There are 90 units of Public Housing, 50 units at Acadia Terrace and 40 units at Kennedy Terrace, consisting of 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 bedroom units, as well as 134 Section 8 units. The Housing Authority also owns a 16 unit building (Roosevelt Heights) consisting of 8 one bedroom units and 8 two bedroom units.

The Family Investment Center is presently operating a HUD Resident Oppoprtunity and Self Sufficiency (ROSS) Grant. The purpose of the Grant is to provide opportunities for Public HOusing Residents to become self-sufficient by increasing awareness of available community resources, reducing barriers to self-sufficiency by providing reimbursement for support services such as travel and childcare. Also providing consistent, ongoing and readily available counseling support to residents and providing education, training and job specific skills that allow housing residents to become more marketable and enable them to compete for jobs in the local economy.
